Workshop Enhancing Marine Biodiversity data collection and publication 2026
calendar_today October 19-23, 2026
location_on Terceira Island, Azores, Portugal
Marine ecosystems are increasingly shaped by the combined effects of pollution, biodiversity loss and climate change, yet observing these pressures in a consistent and integrated way remains challenging. In this presentation, Dr. Victor Martinez Vicente will draw on advances in biooptical oceanography and satellite oceancolour remote sensing to address this gap. He will present work using multimission Earth Observation to detect marine plastic debris, characterise phytoplankton diversity, and assess quantify carbon pools in coastal waters. The talk highlights how model data and in situ bio-optical measurements are used to constrain and improve satellite retrievals. Together, these developments point towards practical EObased indicators that support biodiversity assessments, pollution monitoring and climaterelevant models.
Dr Victor MartinezVicente is a senior biooptical oceanographer at Plymouth Marine Laboratory, specialising in satellite oceancolour remote sensing of marine ecosystems. With over 20 yearsβ experience, his research advances the monitoring of marine biodiversity, carbon cycling and plastic pollution through innovative, multimission Earth Observation approaches and international collaboration.
