Luiz Paulo Assad
Luiz Paulo Assad has a degree in Oceanography from the State University of Rio de Janeiro, a master's degree in Physical Oceanography from the University of São Paulo and a doctorate in Civil Engineering from the Alberto Luiz Coimbra Institute of Graduate Studies and Engineering Research. He is currently an adjunct professor in the Department of Meteorology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and also a permanent professor in the Graduate Program in Meteorology of that department. Researcher and technical coordinator of the Environmental Modeling Nucleus of the Laboratory of Computational Methods in Engineering (LAMCE/COPPE) that represents the Rio de Janeiro AIR Centre Office. He is also a collaborating professor in the Civil Engineering Program at COPPE. He has experience in the field of Physical Oceanography, with an emphasis on oceanic computational modelling, acting mainly on the following themes: global and regional oceanic computational modelling, ocean-atmosphere interaction processes, oil dispersion modelling at the sea and analysis of environmental data..
Moderator
Ramiro Neves
Professor of Fluid Mechanics and Environmental Modelling at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon, coordinator of the Environmental Modelling Group of the Centre of Environment and Marine Technologies and President of the Research Centre. Mech. Eng. by IST (1979). He has a Ph.D on Applied Sciences – Hydrodynamic Modelling - at the University of Liège in Belgium (1986). His major research area is mathematical modelling, being the promoter of the development of the MOHID modelling system which includes integrated models for free surface systems (MOHID Water) and for catchments (MOHID Land), both including openMI technology for interacting in run time. MOHID has a modular architecture including modules for hydrodynamics, erosion and sediment transport and for ecological processes. His professional activity has been developed in the framework of research and applied projects and supported by doctoral and post-doc students. He has participated into more than 40 international (mostly EU) projects, 13 projects funded by the Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT) and strong cooperation with companies and governmental departments (about 30% of his research). Two spinoff companies were generated in his research group (HIDROMOD and Action Modulers, this one now integrated into Bentley). He supervised 23 doctoral theses and is supervising 4 more actually. He his author or co-author 159 publications (114 in international peer reviewed journals and of 18 book chapters and co-editor of 2 journals special numbers and of 2 books and 25 publications in congresses).
