Networking Friday on Ocean Literacy

THIS FRIDAY, July 1, 11:00-13:00 UTC we will have a fantastic Networking Friday on Ocean Literacy with iFADO. As part of the INTERREG Atlantic Area iFADO project, a citizen science action was designed to release a fleet of miniboats from each country of the European Atlantic façade. The action was performed with the educational passages miniboat program dedicated to ocean and environmental literacy. Students work together to prepare, deploy, and track their very own miniboat while learning about ocean currents, weather, technology, and more. Each 5-foot long uncrewed miniboat has a satellite transmitter, allowing everyone to track it as it sails across the ocean. Students connect with the local school and community where it lands and learn about cultures around the world. The Miniboat Program empowers students to become citizen scientists and global ocean stewards.

Francisco Campuzano

iFADO Project Introduction Francisco Campuzano is an oceanographer formed in the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain) with a PhD in Environmental Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (Portugal) and an M.Sc. in Estuarine and Coastal Management and Science at the University of Hull (U.K.). He has been involved in more than 20 research projects at the European, national and regional level in different areas as assessing ecological status, socioeconomics and conceptual and numerical modelling. He is the co-chair of the ICES WGOOFE WG, he is member of three EuroGOOS Working Groups: IBI-ROOS, MONGOOS and Coastal and member of Copernicus Marine Service Champion User Advisory Group (CUAG). In recent times, he was involved in the development of oceanographic operational systems linking watersheds, estuaries and the open ocean (Brito et al., 2015; Campuzano et al., 2016; Campuzano, 2018). He has led several European projects of operational oceanography and environmental management (e.g., Atlantic Area iFADO & CMEMS-LAMBDA) and is the author/co-author of 22 scientific papers and 26 book chapters. He joined +ATLANTIC CoLAB in 2021 to participate in operational modelling activities.

Cassie Stymiest

iFADO–Ocean Literacy and Education with Miniboats Ms. Cassie Stymiest is the Executive Director of the nonprofit Educational Passages (educationalpassages.org), a nonprofit that connects students around the world to the ocean and each other. Ms. Stymiest has 13 years of experience coordinating ocean monitoring systems and integrating data both in and out of the classroom. Current focus is on empowering students to build, launch, track, and recover miniature sailboats with GPS trackers that sail the ocean currents and wind around the globe. Is also Outreach Chair for the National Marine Educators Association (NMEA), on the Board of Directors for the Gulf of Maine Marine Education Association (GOMMEA), and is Past Chair of the New England Ocean Science Education Collaborative (NEOSEC). Ms. Stymiest holds a Bachelor of Science in Marine Sciences with a minor in Creative Arts, and a Certificate in Project Management.

Kieran Reilly

Galway Sailor boat experience Dr Kieran Reilly is an economic analyst in the Marine Institute with 10 years’ experience in marine economic research, with a focus on the economic impacts of marine renewable energy, cost analysis of ocean observations, business plan development and exploitation plan development for innovative ocean observing infrastructure. He holds a PhD in economics and has 2 years’ experience of working in the financial services sector. He has been involved in a number of EU funded projects related to the economic and business aspects of ocean observations.

Carlos Barrera

iFADO I & iFADO II boat experience Carlos Barrera (Oceanographer, University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1997) is since 2007 Head of the Ocean Vehicles Unit at Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN). 25-year experience in ocean-tech with focus on autonomous observing systems and platforms. Technical and operational tasks are time-shared with desk activities related to R&D project-coordination, ocean governance initiatives and services management. Among others, currently is chair of the EuroGOOS Ocean-Glider Task Team, member of the Spanish Autonomous-Ships Working Group, The Maritime Alliance delegate for PLOCAN, coordinator of the PLOCAN Glider School and task leader within EuroSea project to create a recognized international network of Unmanned Surface Vehicles for ocean observing.

Paulo Oliveira

TUGA da Costa Azul boat experience Paulo B. Oliveira. Physical oceanographer with a PhD in Oceanography from the University of Lisbon. He's been a researcher at IPMA's Oceanography Division since 2001. He has participated in several national and international research projects to study the role of the physical processes in phytoplankton dynamics and the variability of marine resources.

Teresa Oliveira

Teresa Oliveira. Arts teatcher at Agrupamento de Escolas de Sampaio. Graduated in Architecture from the Architecture School of the Technical University of Lisbon, in 1990, opted for the career of teaching the arts in basic education in Sesimbra, where she has remained since 1991. In 1996, completed her professionalization in service at the Escola Superior de Educação de Setúbal and, since then, has held various positions such as Class Director, Department Coordinator and Coordinator of Theater and Craft Production Clubs. It was also as a teacher that she joined the Commission for the Protection of Children and Young People of Sesimbra from 2006 to 2012.

Anaïs Turpault

Korrigan boat experience Anaïs Turpault, head of European affairs and financial engineering at Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique, cluster organisation (monte than 400 members) dedicated to maritime innovation in the west of France.

Sue Hartman

KES Kraken boat experience Sue Hartman (Oceanographer, National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, UK, 1990) is a senior researcher in Ocean Biogeochemical Cycles with 3 decades of experience in biogeochemical measurements from laboratory and in situ technologies. Currently a Principal Investigator for biogeochemistry at the PAP-SO (Porcupine Abyssal Plain Sustained Observatory) in the Northeast Atlantic. Task lead for surface CO2 measurements within the UK CLASS (Carbon Linked Atlantic Sector Science) and current Monitoring Station Assembly chair for marine stations within the European research Infrastructure ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System).

Gabriel Araujo-Silva

KES Kraken at the Amazon Forest Gabriel Araujo-Silva (Pharmacist, University of Sciences and Technology of Bahia, 2006), PhD in technological innovation Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (2015). And since 2018, pro-rector of research at the University of the State of Amapá. 15 years of experience in technology and innovation with a focus on community-based new product development systems and platforms. Coordinator of the Nucleus for Sustainable Development of Amazonian Territories (N_UTEX). Lead researcher of the research group on Bioprospection of the Amapaense Amazon. Networking Friday on Science for All with Ciência Viva with young scientists who shared with the audience their ideas and projects for a better future Networking Friday with the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) in support of the United Nations Programme on Space Applications. Networking Friday with Argyro Kavvada (NASA), who reviewed innovative Earth observation solutions for the Sustainable Development Goals. This session was moderated by Samy Djavidnia.
