The AIR Centre took part in the Portuguese Science Summit Innovation 2026, held on 15–16 July at the Lisbon Convention Center, marking the first major event organised by Portugal’s newly established Agency for Research and Innovation (AI²). The AIR Centre was represented by Executive Director Miguel Miranda, Deputy Executive Director Mafalda Carapuço, and Head of Administrative and Financial Department Vanessa Batista.
The Summit brought together a broad cross‑section of Portugal’s scientific, technological and innovation communities to help shape the country’s future Science and Innovation Strategy. A national call for proposals launched between 26 May and 16 June generated 206 submissions, involving more than 1,200 participants and nearly 1,000 organisations. R&D units accounted for 96% of the proposals, followed by companies (63%), associations (49%) and government bodies (44%). These contributions were organised into 20 thematic sessions across six areas: Digital; Health; Environment and Territory; Industry and Energy; Society; and the Science and Innovation Ecosystem.
The event opened with remarks from João Barros, President of AI², and Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, who underscored the importance of strengthening Portugal’s innovation capacity and aligning national priorities with European research agendas.
Across two days, the programme combined plenary discussions and parallel sessions addressing key themes on Portugal’s science and innovation agenda. Topics ranged from oceans, forests, soil, water and climate to emerging technologies, artificial intelligence, aerospace and defence, clinical research, longevity and public health, energy and decarbonisation, and the future of research careers. A dedicated session on international partnerships highlighted the growing importance of cross‑border collaboration in advancing scientific excellence.
These sessions served as structured contributions to Portugal’s forthcoming Science and Innovation Strategy, giving researchers, companies, associations and public bodies a direct role in defining national priorities.
For the AIR Centre, whose mission is rooted in international cooperation and the translation of ocean and environmental science into real‑world impact, the Summit offered a timely opportunity to engage with the national ecosystem, follow emerging policy directions and strengthen connections across sectors.
